Road 96: The Review

Road 96: The Review

Score: 8 out of 10

Overview: "Road 96 is a bold, procedurally-generated adventure that takes players on an emotional journey through a politically charged and deeply personal narrative. By blending road trip mechanics, decision-driven gameplay, and a vibrant soundtrack, the game crafts a unique experience where every choice matters. While its replayability and compelling storytelling are standout features, minor pacing issues and occasional repetitiveness hold it back from reaching its full potential. Still, Road 96 is a thrilling, heartfelt odyssey that lingers long after the credits roll."

The Positives

  • The story captures the desperation, hope, and resilience of its young protagonists. By intertwining personal tales with broader political themes, Road 96 delivers a thought-provoking experience that feels relevant and impactful;
  • Each playthrough offers a unique journey, with random events and encounters that keep the gameplay fresh. This design encourages multiple playthroughs to uncover new stories and perspectives;
  • The game’s cast of characters is diverse and memorable, from the enigmatic hitchhikers to the authoritarian figures. Interactions feel meaningful, and your choices often influence their fates in surprising ways;
  • The vibrant, stylized visuals and detailed environments breathe life into the world of Petria, capturing its beauty and struggles in equal measure. The setting feels alive, with subtle details that reflect the political unrest at its core;
  • The music of Road 96 is a standout feature, with an eclectic mix of tracks that perfectly complement the mood of each scene. From uplifting road trip anthems to somber, reflective pieces, the soundtrack enhances the game’s emotional depth;
  • Every decision, from dialogue options to major actions, impacts your journey. The branching paths and multiple endings add weight to your choices, making you consider the consequences of your actions.

The Negatives

  • While the procedural design keeps things varied, some events and encounters can feel repetitive, especially in consecutive playthroughs. A wider pool of scenarios could have mitigated this issue;
  • The game’s pacing can feel uneven at times, with some sections dragging or lacking the tension needed to keep the narrative momentum strong;
  • While the inclusion of mini-games adds variety, they often lack depth and can feel like distractions rather than meaningful parts of the experience;
  • The episodic nature of the story sometimes leads to abrupt shifts in tone or context, which can disrupt immersion and make certain moments feel less impactful.

The Experience

Road 96 is a daring and emotionally resonant journey that excels in its storytelling and choice-driven gameplay. It captures the uncertainty and excitement of a road trip while weaving a narrative that is both intimate and politically charged. Despite minor flaws in pacing and variety, the game’s heart and creativity shine through, offering a memorable adventure that rewards curiosity and empathy.
For those who enjoy narrative-driven games and making tough choices, Road 96 is a road worth traveling. It’s a poignant reminder of the power of human connection and the courage it takes to fight for freedom.

      Dreamcore: The Review

      Dreamcore : The Review Score:  5.5 out of 10 Overview : " Dreamcore is an atmospheric yet simple exploration of some of the internet's most recent horror tropes. Both levels we played in the review period, felt under-cooked and uninspired making us wanting to spend our time playing other recreations of these famous horror tales." The Experience Dreamcore  shows a lot of promise with its concept, exploring these horror worlds in a different perspective. We'll be taking a look at both levels separately as they features individual positives and negatives: Level 1 ( Dreampools ) - Dreampools is another take on the "backrooms" formula, one that unfortunately, doesn't shine in this new iteration. The puzzle that takes place during the first half of the level is probably the highlight of the entire game by creating a scenario where the player has to be in a constant "focus" mode to solve it. It shows that the developers do know how to make these wor...
