Insomniac Games took everything that made the original great and amplified it, creating an experience that feels bigger, bolder, and more dynamic. With its robust arsenal, engaging platforming, and quirky humor, Going Commando is a shining example of a sequel done right. It strikes a near-perfect balance between challenge, creativity, and fun, making it a standout title in the PS2 library and a beloved classic."

The Positives

  • Going Commando introduces an incredible arsenal of creative and upgradeable weapons, from the explosive Mini-Nuke to the clever Sheepinator. The ability to level up weapons as you use them adds depth and replayability, encouraging players to experiment with different tools in combat. The addition of new gadgets also expands your options for tackling challenges;
  • The game’s level design is a standout, with vibrant, varied planets that feel more expansive and interactive than before. From lush jungles to industrial complexes, every environment is packed with secrets, platforming challenges, and enemies to conquer. The inclusion of optional missions and side areas rewards exploration and keeps the gameplay fresh;
  • The gameplay strikes an excellent balance between platforming, combat, and exploration. Improved movement mechanics, like strafing and the inclusion of jetpacks, make navigation smoother and combat more strategic. The controls feel precise, ensuring that platforming sections are as enjoyable as they are challenging;
  • The narrative introduces a more nuanced and engaging plot, with Ratchet and Clank’s journey taking a more personal turn. The humor remains sharp, filled with witty dialogue and satirical jabs at consumerism and corporate greed. The cast of characters, from the pompous Captain Qwark to the enigmatic Angela Cross, keeps the story entertaining and memorable;
  • The inclusion of a New Game+ mode (Challenge Mode) and the Bolt Multiplier system adds significant replay value. Players can revisit planets with stronger enemies and upgraded weapons, making each playthrough feel rewarding. The various collectibles and skill points further incentivize multiple runs;
  • Going Commando adds exciting new gameplay elements, such as space combat sequences, hoverbike races, and spherical platforming challenges. These diversions are well-implemented and add variety to the core gameplay loop, ensuring there’s always something new to enjoy;
  • The game pushes the PS2 hardware to its limits with impressive visuals, detailed environments, and smooth animations. The soundtrack is equally noteworthy, with energetic tracks that perfectly match the game’s tone and pace.


The Negatives

  • While the challenge is generally satisfying, certain levels and boss fights can feel disproportionately difficult, especially for first-time players. Some segments demand precision and quick reflexes, which can be frustrating without proper preparation;
  • Despite the addition of strafing, the camera can occasionally feel clunky in tight spaces or during hectic battles. These moments are rare but noticeable, detracting slightly from an otherwise polished experience;
  • While the story is entertaining and humorous, it doesn’t delve too deeply into its characters or themes. The focus remains firmly on fun and action, which works well but might leave players wanting more emotional depth compared to later entries in the series.

The Experience

Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando is a prime example of how to craft a sequel that builds on its predecessor in every meaningful way. Clocking in at around 15–20 hours, it offers a rich and rewarding experience filled with action-packed gameplay, inventive design, and a healthy dose of humor.
While it has a few rough edges, its charm, creativity, and sheer fun make it a must-play for fans of platformers and action games alike. Whether you’re leveling up your arsenal, exploring vibrant worlds, or laughing at the series’ trademark humor, Going Commando delivers an unforgettable adventure that solidifies its place as one of the PS2’s finest games.
