Immortals of Aveum: The Review

Overview

"Immortals of Aveum" is an ambitious first-person magic shooter that delivers flashy spell-slinging combat in a visually stunning world. Developed by Ascendant Studios, this single-player FPS ditches guns for gauntlet-powered magic, offering a fresh take on the genre. With a lore-heavy narrative, vibrant environments, and high-speed action, the game has its moments of brilliance—but it’s held back by repetitive encounters, bloated pacing, and a story that struggles to stay engaging. While it introduces fun mechanics and an intriguing world, Immortals of Aveum doesn’t quite reach the heights it aims for.

Score: 6.5 out of 10

The Positives

Visually Striking: Aveum’s world is full of dazzling colors, grand architecture, and impressive particle effects that make spellcasting a spectacle. The game’s presentation is undeniably polished.

Fast-Paced Spell Combat: The magical FPS combat is unique and offers a satisfying mix of ranged, melee, and defensive spells. The different spell colors (red, blue, and green) add some strategic depth.

Strong Performance Capture: The cast, led by Darren Barnet as protagonist Jak, delivers solid performances that help bring the world to life. Facial animations and voice acting are well-done.

RPG Progression System: Unlocking and upgrading new abilities through the skill tree gives a sense of growth and variety in how you approach combat.

Epic Set Pieces: The game delivers some impressive large-scale battles and cinematic sequences that feel straight out of a blockbuster action film.

The Negatives

⚠️ Repetitive Combat: While spellcasting is fun, enemy encounters quickly become formulaic, with little variety in enemy types or battle scenarios.

⚠️ Bloated Storytelling: The narrative tries to build a deep, lore-heavy world but often feels bogged down by excessive exposition and predictable twists.

⚠️ Uneven Pacing: Some sections drag on too long, filled with unnecessary filler content that slows down the momentum.

⚠️ Mediocre Level Design: While the world looks great, exploration feels restricted, with mostly linear paths and uninspired puzzle-solving sections.

⚠️ Lack of Enemy Diversity: The magic-based combat deserved more varied enemies, but many encounters feel too similar, making battles lose their impact over time.

The Experience

"Immortals of Aveum" is a visually impressive and ambitious attempt at shaking up the FPS genre with magic-based combat, but it doesn’t fully stick the landing. The spell-slinging mechanics are fun, and the world has some interesting lore, but the repetitive gameplay, bloated pacing, and limited variety in encounters hold it back. There’s enjoyment to be found in the flashy combat and big cinematic moments, but it doesn’t quite have the staying power of the best in the genre. A decent, if flawed, experience for those looking for a different take on first-person action.
